Michelin

Michelin's logo

Our good old french friend Michelin. Who doesn’t know the iconic white guy made by white tires? But is Michelin more than their iconic mascot? Let’s see how everything started first.

It all started in the time when the pneumatic tire was still taking its first steps. In the year of 1889 while the two brothers André and Édouard Michelin were running their farm implement business left by their grandfather, one cyclist came to their factory seeking repairs for his bicycle’s pneumatic tire.

Have in mind that in those times, changing or repairing tires wasn’t an easy job.

They had to demount the tire from the bicycle, had to glue the tire to the rim, and had to let it dry overnight. The next day when they tested how the repaired tire would perform, the tire failed after 100 meters. They knew that if they could find a way to make this repairing process easier, the interest in pneumatic tires would grow up. That’s exactly what they did and this is exactly what happened.

In 1891, they patented their first removable pneumatic tire.

Today the company leads the most rankings and their tires are known for their safety, durability, performance and comfort of driving. Their only disadvantage is their high price. But if money isn’t the issue for you, then Michelin is your choice.

PROS:

– Good all-round quality of their products.

– Trusted by everyone.

× CONS:

– Their price.

Bridgestone

Bridgestone's logo

The Japanese giant Bridgestone was founded in 1931 and today is the biggest tire manufacturer in the world, followed by Michelin. The name “Bridgestone” actually comes from the surname of its founder Shojiro Ishibashi, which means “bridge stone”.

In 1988 Bridgestone purchased the American Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, transforming the merging into the world’s largest tire and rubber company.

Nowadays, Bridgestone tires are famous for their high quality, durability, performance and value. Their price is cheaper than the price of Michelin tires, but both share almost the same qualities and are considered top brands.

PROS:

– Longer life and durability.

– Good traction in both wet and dry road surfaces.

× CONS:

– Some complain that they are noisier than other tire brands.

– May be challenging to find the right tire for your vehicle.

Goodyear

Let’s talk about the Americans.

“Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company” was founded in 1898 by Frank Seiberling and is based in Akron, Ohio. It was named after Charles Goodyear, the inventor of vulcanized rubber.

Goodyear was the most successful tire supplier in Formula 1 before they left the sport after the 1998 season and are the only supplier of NASCAR since 1954. The GOODYEAR Blimp became one of the most recognizable advertising icons in America after its first flight in 1925.

Goodyear tires are famous for their innovative technology and their durability. It’s a trusted brand with very good reputation, but shares mixed customer reviews overall.

PROS:

– Good durability.

– Large diversity of tires to choose from.

× CONS:

– The price may be high.

– Mixed customer reviews.

Cooper

Another American tire manufacturer, acquired by Goodyear in 2021. All started when two brothers-in-law named John F. Schaefer and Claude E. Hart, founded the “M and M Manufacturing Company” in 1914, producing tire repair kits, tire patches and tire cement.

The latter name originated from “The Cooper Corporation” which was founded in 1919 by I. J. Cooper. Both companies, alongside with the “Falls Rubber” company merged in 1930 forming “Master Tire and Rubber Company”. The name was changed officially to “Cooper Tire & Rubber Company” in 1946.

Today, the company is mostly known for their quality tires at affordable prices. While companies like Michelin and Bridgestone might offer more expensive products, Cooper’s prices are affordable and in the same time with good average quality.

PROS:

– Affordable average prices.

– Positive reviews.

× CONS:

– Not as good as the other brands.

Continental

Continental's logo

It’s impossible without mentioning the Germans, as they are famous for making things at their best quality.

After all, Germany is home of some most respected and famous automotive brands in the world. Continental is not only manufacturer of tires but they also manufacture other car parts like brake systems, chassis components, tachographs and others.

The company was founded in 1871 as “Continental-Caoutchouc und Gutta-Percha Compagnie” and late in 1920 the company merged with other major companies from the same industry to form the largest rubber company in Germany named “Continental Gummi-Werke AG”.

Today Continental tires are famous for their quality and popularity, thus making it easy to find just the correct tires for your car.

PROS:

– Easy to find the right tires for your vehicle.

– Excellent quality.

– Solid warranties.

× CONS:

– Price may be higher compared to other tire brands in the same category.

Thanks for sharing your insights on the top tire brands in the market. I totally agree that choosing the right brand depends on individual driving styles. Your breakdown of Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Cooper, and Continental is super helpful.

I’ve personally had a great experience with Michelin – the safety, durability, and performance really stand out, although the price can be a bit steep. It’s awesome that you’ve highlighted the pros and cons for each brand, making it easier if someone wants to make an informed decision.

Personally, I’d recommend considering the driving conditions and terrain, as you rightly mentioned. Doing research is key! Keep up the great work, and thanks for being a valuable resource for those navigating the world of tires.

I really enjoyed your article about the five best tire brands. I run on the Cooper tires myself. I really like the feel of them on the road and the durability of them. I am curious, do you happen to know how many tire manufacturers there are and do any of the top brands produce off brand tires?

    Rod

    • Kaiser Wheels says:

      Hi Rod,

Thank you for your positive feedback on the article, and I’m delighted to hear that you’re a fan of Cooper tires.

Regarding your question, there are numerous tire manufacturers globally, and it’s challenging to provide an exact count. However, some well-known brands, like these I already stated in the post, dominate the market. Of course, there are many more players in the industry. These companies often have subsidiaries or produce tires under various brand names.

When it comes to top brands producing off-brand tires, many manufacturers do so to cater to different market segments. A notable example is the Japanese brand Bridgestone, which has “Firestone” as its subsidiary, primarily serving the USA. These off-brand tires may exhibit varying performance characteristics and price points compared to the primary brand, providing consumers with more options.

If you have a specific brand in mind, feel free to let me know, and I can provide more detailed information. Otherwise, I hope this general overview helps!

      Best regards,

      Nikolay
